King Residence, Queen Creek, Arizona
Date of Investigation: 10/30/2009 Summary: Base EMF readings were taken at the beginning of the investigation and with the exception of the front sitting room, were all within normal ranges or had readily explainable man-made sources (i.e. microwave, ceiling fan motors etc). The front room had very high readings emanating approximately 2-3 ft. from all three walls (two adjoining outside, one to the garage). Additional investigation did not reveal the source of the readings (>5mG), however, they were consistent and probably man-made. It was observed that the residence phone box wiring was on the outside of one of the adjoining walls. This however does not match the scope and distance from the wall reading that were obtained on the inside. The paranormal events explained by the residence were not observed by us during the investigation. Key item to the investigation was a touch lamp that had been observed going on and off on its own. The resident placed a picture of a deceased pet Siamese cat by the name of Zeke by the lamp and the observed phenomena appeared to stop. That led the resident to believe the spirit of her animal, with whom she was quite fond, was responsible for the activity. In order to validate this suspicion, it was necessary to try to recreate the event by removing the picture in the hopes that this would cause a reversion of the environment to when the lamp seemed to operate on its own. Once the picture was removed, flour was placed around the lamp and a video camera was positioned to observe the lamp during for the extent of the investigation. Additionally, an Oscilloscope probe was inserted into the surge protector for the purposes of observing any possible power fluctuations in more detail than can be provided by volt meter alone. An EMF was placed in the vicinity along with a digital voice recorder as well. When the camera was retrieved, it was observed that the flour had not been disturbed, and the lamp was not lit. A few things were tried to activate the lamp (vibration from different sources) but none created the same effect. Touch lamps operate by changes in surface capacitance. The lamps frame holds a fixed charge of electrons until something comes in contact with the surface to change the surface capacity, thereby allowing electrons to flow (due to the increased capacity or capacitance). These properties are used to act as the switch for the device. With this in mind, it is possible an electromagnetic field (natural, man-made, or paranormal) could interfere with the surface capacitance of the lamp causing it to self illuminate. A faulty switch is also not out of the question, but since the activity stopped when the picture was placed next to it, this possibility was not extensively explored as the switch did appear to be working properly when it was examined. During the investigation a total of three (3) EVP sessions were held. One was recording while the lamp was being filmed, the second in the guest bedroom, and the third in the master bedroom. No paranormal activity was directly observed during these sessions. What was revealed during review was remarkable. Multiple voices were recorded from multiple distinct men, a woman, a child, and a few unexplained noises. Of particular note was the capture of a disembodied voice that was heard to say ‘We Seek’. It is being classified as such because the video session also caught this recording. Neither I nor Meggy was in the room at the time; we had left the recorder running on the bed. The voice is clearly distinct from ours heard from our downstairs location. In addition to the disembodied voice, review of the video revealed a short section of video where the camera was visibly shaken. The benefit of the placement of the camera filming the lamp was that it was in front of a mirror and it can be clearly seen that no one is near the camera during the event. The only disadvantage of the camera angle was that the sink obscured the view of the lower section of the tripod that was holding the camera, so it is possible the family cat could rub the legs without being in frame (limited paths that could be taken without detection of movement on camera after the shaking occurred). However, due to the observed behavior of the feline during our visit, specifically the fact that it remained in hiding 98% of the investigation, I find it fairly unlikely it came out and explored without being caught at all. Pending this, the footage appears to be authentic and should be considered as a possible paranormal event. Only one item of note was observed. After introductions with the client, Meggy was going over disclosure forms. At which time, I reached for the pen that was clipped to my shirt to offer it to the client for use. They already had several, so I left the pen in my shirt. Minutes later, during the walk-thru, I realized my pen was no longer on my shirt. After a complete retrace to the room where I had seen it last, it was noted and the investigation continued. When the investigation was concluded, I went to load my equipment in the trunk and the missing pen was lying in the middle of the trunk. It should be noted that no trips were made to the car trunk after the initial unloading, which was before I was going to offer my pen (which was when I noted I still had it clipped to my shirt) and the reloading of equipment to my car. Meggy noted I may have experienced a Disappearing Object Phenomenon (aka DOP-ler effect). However, since the pen presence on my shirt could not be corroborated before its disappearance, I have to classify the event as a personal experience only. It is noted only for the purpose of completion and should not be used for definitive paranormal evidence. Addendum: Review of one of the EVP sessions caught a child saying ‘What I got’ when Meggy and I were talking about the missing pen. It is still not definitive proof of a paranormal event, but it was an intriguing coincidence. 153 photos examined. Nothing of note to report Conclusion: Update: During the reveal, baseline EVP readings were conducted in the front room of the house to verify the constant source of EMF was still present. We were surprised to find that two separate meters now read the room as having completely normal ranges of EMF(<1mG). We cannot explain the almost complete absence of EMF. We could not determine what was causing it in the first place, as it was emanating strongest in an area devoid of electronic devices of any kind. The EMF seemed to be coming from the region of the sectional couch area, but the entire perimeter of the room approximately 2-3 from the wall inward was giving high readings. During the reveal with the clients, it was noted that the client does remember Shawn having his pen clipped to his shirt during the beginning of the investigation.
