Children and the Paranormal How do we protect them? It has been said by many researchers of the paranormal that children and teens are more susceptible to the paranormal than we as adults are. Researchers believe that this is because the children have not been subjected to the skepticism surrounding the paranormal. When I was growing up, I was never told that ghosts weren’t real. I think that had a lot to do with my sensitivity to the paranormal, also my passion of wanting to understand more. It wasn’t easy growing up in a haunted home. There were times when none of my friends wanted to stay the night. And then there was the fact that we weren’t supposed to talk about the strange things that happened in our home to others. As children, we did (my brother’s and me) We realized quickly that people were skeptics, harsh ones to boot! So, how can we protect our children when they experience the paranormal? How do we protect them from harsh skeptics? As parents, we need to approach these situations with understanding (even if we don’t understand what’s going on ourselves), compassion, and also with a skeptics mind! We need to be understanding; this is a scary situation for the child and the parents. Since children are often the ones to notice the activity first, it is hard for us as parents to believe in such a thing. We usually dismiss it as “imaginary friends”, their imaginations, fear, seeing things… you name it, and we as parents have come up with every other reason, except the paranormal. We need to be compassionate. Understand that our children are scared, they don’t understand what this is either and they are looking to YOU for the answer. We also need to look at it with a skeptics mind… to not label everything as the paranormal. Children have amazing imaginations, as a mother of 3, I know this all too well… Keeping these three important things in mind, you will be able to help your child cope. I am no psychologist, and I don’t claim to be one… but I do know what my mother did for us worked… We talked about it amongst the family, when we realized that we were all having similar and even different incidents, it was no longer deniable. Here are some tips to help when your child does experience something you believe it paranormal: Document it, keep a notebook and write down your child’s experiences. Listen, they don’t always want to talk about things, but when they do… LISTEN take the time to sit down with them Ask questions! Don’t drill them about every detail, they may not remember… ask questions that are relevant, what were they wearing? What did it look like? Did they speak to you? If so, what did they say? I hope this helps… if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give us a call! ♦
